Offcut — Cut Layout Optimizer
Welcome to Offcut support. We’re here to help you get the most out of your cut layout planning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
Q: How do I create my first project? Tap the + button on the Projects screen. The New Project Wizard will guide you through three steps: naming your project and selecting your material type, adding your sheet stock dimensions, and entering the pieces you need to cut.
Q: What units does Offcut support? Offcut supports both Imperial (inches, fractions) and Metric (millimetres) units. You can switch units in Settings → Unit System. Fraction input (e.g. 3/4”, 1-3/8”) is fully supported on the Imperial keyboard.
Q: How many projects can I have? The free tier supports 1 project. Upgrading to the Hobbyist tier unlocks unlimited projects.
Cut Layout Optimization
Q: What algorithm does Offcut use? Offcut uses the MAXRECTS bin packing algorithm with multiple heuristics, combined with guillotine packing for tool-constrained cuts. It generates up to 8–10 distinct layout options so you can choose the one that best fits your workflow.
Q: Why did some of my pieces get dropped from the layout? If all your pieces cannot fit on the sheets you’ve provided, Offcut will drop lower-priority pieces to produce a valid layout. Dropped pieces are shown in the results with an explanation. To fix this, try:
- Adding more sheets
- Increasing sheet quantity
- Reducing piece dimensions
- Upgrading piece priority
Q: What does piece priority mean?
- 🔴 Critical — Never dropped; Offcut will add extra sheets if needed
- 🟠 High — Placed before Normal/Low priority pieces
- 🟡 Normal — Standard priority (default)
- 🟢 Low — Dropped first when space is tight
Q: How do I set a tool profile? Go to Settings → Tool Profile and select the cutting tool(s) you have available. Offcut adapts the layout algorithm based on your tools — for example, a Table Saw uses guillotine cuts only, while a Jigsaw allows free-path cutting.
Q: What is grain direction locking? When enabled for a piece, grain direction locking prevents the piece from being rotated 90°. Use this for pieces where the wood grain must run in a specific direction (e.g. cabinet doors, visible panels).
PDF Export
Q: How do I export my layout as a PDF? From the Layout Results screen, tap the Share / Export button. A PDF containing your cut diagrams and parts legend will be generated locally on your device and presented via the standard iOS share sheet.
Q: PDF export is not available — why? PDF export requires the Hobbyist tier or higher. The free tier supports screenshot export only.
